Interstellar Scintillation of PSR J 0437 − 4715 on Two Scales ?

چکیده
We sought to determine the scale of scintillation in the interstellar plasma of PSR J0437−4715. We used the Very Long Baseline Array to obtain scintillation amplitude and phase data, from dynamic spectra at 327 MHz. We observe two scales of scintillation of pulsar PSR J0437−4715, differing by more than an order of magnitude in scintillation bandwidth. The widerbandwidth scale of scintillation that we observe indicates less scattering for this pulsar than for other nearby pulsars, other than PSR B0950+08.

2 Evidence for Intermittent Turbulence from Scintillation Parameters of PSR J 0437 - 4715
We propose a novel model for radio-wave scattering in the interstellar medium, on the basis of observations of PSR J0437-4715. We find that, although our estimates of the scintillation velocity and the distance to the scattering material agree with previous estimates, the decorrelation bandwidth and time scale of scintillation for this pulsar differ by an order of magnitude from those extrapola...

Aims. We studied the turbulence spectrum of the local interstellar plasma in the direction of PSR J0437−4715, on the basis of our observations and those reported earlier by others. Methods. We combine these data to form a structure function for the variations of phase along the line of sight to the pulsar. For observations that did not report them, we infer modulation indices from a theoretical...

We observed PSR J0437−4715 with the FUV-MAMA detector of the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrometer (STIS) to measure the pulsar’s spectrum and pulsations. For the first time, UV emission from a millisecond pulsar is detected. The measured flux, (2.0± 0.2)× 10 erg s cm in the 1150–1700 Å range, corresponds to the luminosity LFUV = (4.7 ± 0.5) × 10 27 erg s, for the distance of 140 pc and n...

We present a total of 48 minutes of observations of the nearby, bright millisecond pulsar PSR J0437−4715 taken at the Parkes radio observatory in Australia. The data were obtained at a central radio frequency of 1380 MHz using a high-speed tape recorder that permitted coherent Nyquist sampling of 50 MHz of bandwidth in each of two polarizations. Using the high time resolution available from thi...
